It is considered a great honor to be asked to write a eulogy and while the whole purpose of an eulogy is to speak from the heart while commemorating the person who has passed away, there are a few things to remember to help you along with writing an eulogy. Funeral poems do not need to be sad or tearful, as long as they reflect the character of the person you have lost.
When you are grieving, it is normal that your thoughts are about death, but remember it is about celebrating a life lived as well. If you have been asked to deliver a eulogy, appreciate the honor you have been given. There are towns in which every family visits the neighborhood funeral home at one time or another.
Adequate preparation must be made to gather biographical facts about the person you will be talking about. If you and the deceased were co-workers, then talk about how great he performed his job, his dedication to doing his work and his ambition to do well in his chosen career. If it helps, concentrate on one person in the audience that you know and love and speak to them.
Your relationship with your deceased loved ones did not begin and stop overnight. No one will be timing you, with a stopwatch, so take your time.
